Kevin Gilmartin received his introduction to vegetable farming through working with special needs youth in a large therapeutic garden with St. Christopher’s Institute, where students learned to grow vegetables from seed to eventually sell at the farmers market. His path took him from therapeutic gardening to farming for CSA members and area restaurants at Hilltop Hanover Farm. After honing his skills for a couple of years, Kevin returned to the residential care setting at Green Chimneys to run a vegetable-farming program. He guided children, young adults, interns and volunteers through vegetable production and marketing, herb gardening, maple syrup making and mushroom growing. At the core of this nature based program was the lesson that to succeed, we must restore the soil and work in concert with each other and with natural systems. In his role as farm manager at Purdys Farm, Kevin continues to be passionate about growing nutritious, high quality vegetables and sharing what he has learned with others.
